Shelfari is an online application which is designed to satisfy the longings of book lovers from all over the world. With Shelfari, users are able to catalog books and create a social community where catalogued books are the focus for reviews, discussions, ratings and much mire. Book lovers are able to contact each other and discuss books. Many types of people can use the information about books for their own purposes too. Some people may seek inspiration based on the discussions that are occurring in the Shelfari environment. Readers are also discover new books, find people with similar tastes and form friendships that revolve around what people are reading or plan to read. People in the community can find common ground or be energized by varying viewpoints. Users can build their own bookshelf which will contain a list of all the books that they have and may want to share.

The Shelfari website was launched in October, 2006 and by in 2007, Amazon.com had invested $1 million. Subsequently, Amazon.com acquired Shelfari in 2008. Founded by Josh Hug, Kevin Beukelman, and Mark Williamson who were RealNetworks alumni. The original name of the application was Tastemakers Inc. and its goal was to create a social networking service for avid readers. Still within the Amazon family, Shelfari is becoming a popular book-based social network.

Also, the application provides a variety of features that including sorting, filtering, reviewing and rating books. Users are also able to organize or categorize their books into different shelves.
